John Hartson shares gambling recovery story with SVR

Gambling is often referred to as the ‘silent addiction’, but Veterans and staff at Scottish Veterans Residences collectively found their voice to contribute to an incredibly powerful discussion about gambling harm, treatment, recovery and hope, led by John Hartson and his wife Sarah.

John is - of course - best known for his stellar football career, including five years at Celtic, but first and foremost he spoke to us as a recovering addict (15 years clean), who has found the strength to beat his own addiction and help others through GA and the foundation of his Gambling & Addiction Workshop: jhrecovery.co.uk

With great humility, John shared his own story into and then out of gambling addiction; and was then followed by Sarah, who movingly described her experience as an affected other. The pair were joined at the 3-hour session in our Glasgow residence, Bellrock Close, by specialist addiction therapist Tony Marini, who gave further insight into addiction and recovery; and Jon Murray (an RAF Veteran) from Gordon Moody - who offer help and treatment to people affected by gambling harm: gordonmoody.org.uk

All of our guests were absorbing, authentic and relatable speakers, and their presentations sparked a raw, emotional, but hugely positive conversation in the room.

A huge thank you to them all for their time and passion for helping others affected by gambling addiction.
