Murdo's Story

Murdo, 47 years old, had problems after he left the Army in 1979. Murdo served for six years with the Royal Mechanical Electrical Engineers (REME) as a Craftsman. Murdo worked as a mechanic, bus driver and landscape gardener when he left the Army.

"I came to Whitefoord House in 1998. I had been living at the Bethany Hostel in Leith for two nights but with people hiding knifes in their jeans I decided to get out of there. I phoned Edinburgh Council's Social Work and they put my in touch with SVR. I was quite surprised that SVR took me in because I was only 38 and because I thought it was just strictly for older veterans.

You've got company here if you want it, it's cheap for me and also everything is provided for me. I don't have to worry about anything - I'm not isolated. I've been through a difficult divorce. I tried living in a flat on my own but this is a great alternative to the loneliness and isolation. It's a great community spirit and you have your own room. I have my own room, which is en-suite and is fully furnished. That's what I like about it. Whitefoord House has helped me. I had nowhere else to go. I was living on the street"
